NOx Hazards
When inhaled into the deep parts of the lungs, it can cause bronchitis or emphysema. NOx can also react photochemically with other pollutants in the atmosphere, forming photochemical smog pollution. NO, when oxidized in the atmosphere, transforms into nitric acid, which is one of the causes of acid rain. NO can also reduce the ozone in the stratosphere, thereby increasing the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth.
Formation Mechanism
Thermal Type
Thermal NOx is generated by the oxidation of nitrogen in the air under high temperature conditions, and its generation amount depends on the temperature. When T < 1500ºC, the amount of NO generated is minimal, but when T > 1500ºC, the reaction rate increases by 6-7 times for every 100ºC increase in temperature.
Fuel Type
Fuel NOx is produced by the thermal decomposition and oxidation of nitrogen compounds in the fuel during combustion, and it is closely related to the oxygen concentration near the flame.
Prompt Type
Prompt NOx is rapidly generated in the reaction zone when the concentration of hydrocarbon fuel is high during combustion. Under normal furnace temperatures, the intensity of its formation is negligible.
Solution
According to the different mechanisms of nitrogen oxides formation, in the context of the industrial kiln industry, the generation of nitrogen oxides during combustion is mainly of the thermal type:
Fuel-type NOx primarily depends on the composition of nitrogen compounds in the fuel itself, which can be addressed through pre-treatment such as purification.
Prompt-type NOx has a minimal contribution and can be neglected.
Considering the above, we mainly focus on controlling thermal-type nitrogen oxides, which can be divided into in-process combustion control and post-combustion control. Post-combustion control methods include catalytic methods, carbon adsorption, and ozone methods, among others, which will be introduced separately. However, these methods generally involve high investment and operating costs.
Therefore, we have introduced low-NOx burners for in-process combustion control. In the design, we fully consider factors such as air and fuel gas mixing angles and staged combustion to reduce the theoretical combustion temperature and local high-temperature zones, ultimately achieving the goal of reducing nitrogen oxides generation.
This solution is suitable for various types of industrial kilns using conventional combustion technologies and fueled by natural gas, coke oven gas, mixed gas, etc.
